Science Teacher
This is my first year as the instructor of the Biology and Earth Science courses at Round Valley High School. However, I am not new to working in Round Valley. Last year I volunteered in the high school biology class and worked as a substitute at both the elementary and high school level. I also managed one the schools’ nutrition grants. I enjoyed the experience very much and I’m happy for the opportunity to work with the students at Round Valley High School.
I have an extensive background in outdoor science education. I have taught at several outdoor science camps and have led several youth wilderness hikes throughout the Trinity and Marble Mountain Wilderness areas. After working for ten years in the field of environmental and outdoor science education I decided to bring my knowledge ‘indoors’. I recently completed my teaching credential and masters in science education at University of California, Davis.
My goals for this year are to strength the students’ critical thinking skills and develop their understanding of science. I plan to reach these goals by presenting lessons that build upon the students’ pre-existing knowledge and skills. I also plan to integrate more hands-on activities into my lessons. Through my past involvement with the school I have gained a better understanding of the type of lessons that work best for our students at Round Valley High School. I plan to expose our students to more ‘real-life’ science. Students will have the opportunity to explore science in the field as they work with the local tribes’ Natural Resource Department and Humboldt State University.
