Native American Land Curriculum

Grades Pre-K - 1st

Dear Families of Students in Pre-K - 1st Grade,

This year our teachers will be using a Culturally Appropriate Curriculum, in addition to our regular curriculum, with the children. The curriculum is designed to help young children become more aware of the natural world around them and begin to make connections to deepen their understanding of Native culture and their relationship to the world.

As the family of a child at RVES you play an important role in helping our staff make this experience more personal for your child and family.  The curriculum is based around a set of eight stories, each connected to one element of life:  Creation, Mother Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Plants, Animals, and the Stars.  The curriculum consists of simple stories from various tribes that will help teach the children about each of the elements.  In an effort to make learning experiences more personal we are encouraging families to share from their own culture.  The stories can be about any one of the eight elements and lesson activities will be adapted for support.
